Chapter 10 – Anna

“A little to the left. Now drop it just a teensy bit down. Perfect!” I handed Jason the staple gun for him to make sure the Christmas garland remained intact. I stepped back and looked at the overall effect of the decorations I had put up with Jason’s help. When we had returned from Scotland I had immediately gone into Christmas mode. I was surprised when Jason told me that he usually spent Christmas alone at home or travelling for business meetings with clients who did not care that it was a holiday. Well, there would be none of that this year. Last year this time I had been planning a wedding with one Grant brother. If anyone had told me then that I would be spending Christmas with the other brother I would have told them they were lying. But here I was with Jason, making menu plans. And I wanted to make it spectacular. We were both going back to work at the start of the year and I wanted to make the best of it. Admittedly, I was very hesitant about leaving Eloise already and wondered if I should take Jason up on his suggestion of resigning. But I realized that even if I resigned I would still need to find something to do for an income. I could not just sit around depending on Jason. But as it was right now, I would still have to work part time. Unless I could work from home. It had possibilities. But that was a discussion I would have to have with my boss.

“Are you ready to do the tree?” I looked up as Jason stepped off the ladder.

“Maybe tomorrow. I have a few more decorations I want to get for it. So maybe this weekend.

“Okay. I should be back by then. I told you I had an urgent meeting, right?”

I rolled my eyes with a smile on my face. “For the millionth time, yes.”

“It’s just overnight. Are you sure you don’t want Nancy to come over? Or you could come to Scotland with me.”

“I’ll be fine, Jason. Trust me.” I assured him

“Okay. But if you need anything-”

“-just pick up the phone.” I cut him off

“Right. I don’t want anything to happen to you and Ellie while I’m gone. I just want to keep you both safe.”

He wrapped his arms around me and kissed my forehead. I placed my head on his chest, feeling his heart beat through the t-shirt. He ran his hands up and down my back and I snuggled deeper into his embrace, wrapping my arms around his waist. He chuckled from somewhere above my head. “You claim I’m like a cat with my stealth. But you’re a just a little tabby wanting to be cuddled aren’t you. All that’s left for you to do is purr.”

I made a soft meowing sound in my throat, and he laughed and hugged me tighter. We stood like that for a few moments, each lost in thought.
